Hubdog Quick Guide to encoding Video for Windows Mobile devices

Due to the wide diversity of Windows Mobile devices available out there, it is difficult for videocasters to provide a smooth media encoding format universally compatible with all types of Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphone. To resolve this playability issue, 3 scenarios can by considered by videocasters:

1.     Target All devices by providing low-quality encoding video feeds.
2.     Target New devices by providing medium/high-quality video feeds.
3.     Provide two video feeds: one low-quality and one medium/high-quality and let users choose the format that best suits them

Encoding Profiles
This guide will show you 2 different encoding profiles for generating video content intended to be watched on Windows Mobile devices.
After encoding your content according to these profiles, all you will need to do is add your newly formatted videos as podcast enclosures to your RSS/XML feed.

For the following examples, we used this clip as video source:

Scenario: Target All devices
Use a Low-Quality encoding profile suitable for All Windows Mobile devices.

Encoding details:
Total Bit Rate     313 kbps
Audio Format      48 kbps, 44 kHz, Stereo CBR
Video Size           320 X 240
Frame Rate         20 fps
Video Bit Rate    256 kbps
Audio Codec        Windows Media Audio 9.1
Video Codec        Windows Media Video V7

Scenario: Target New devices
Use a Medium/High-quality encoding profile suitable for New Windows Mobile devices.

Encoding details:
Total Bit Rate     457 kbps
Audio Format      48 kbps, 44 kHz, Stereo CBR
Video Size           320 X 240
Frame Rate         20 fps
Video Bit Rate    400 kbps
Audio Codec        Windows Media Audio 9.1
Video Codec        Windows Media Video V7

Encoding with Windows Media Encoder
This section provides you with a step-by-step tutorial on how to encode video with Windows Media Encoder.

1 - Download & Install Windows Media Encoder: Windows Media Encoder 9 Download Link
Note: Windows Media Encoder is free to use.

2 - Download on your computer the Windows Media Encoder profile that best suits you:

Profile 1
Target All devices

3- Start Windows Media Encoder Wizard and choose "Custom Session".

4- Select "Source From File" in the Source Tab. Click Browse button and look for your video source in the Output Tab, un-check "Pull from encoder" and check "Encode to file". Choose a name and location for your encoded video files.

5- Go to the Compression Tab, Click on Edit, Import and select the profile you previously downloaded. Click OK. You are now ready to encode your video. Click on "Start Encoding" on the top of the screen.

7- After finishing encoding your video, you can Host your encoded media file and add it’s URL link to your RSS/XML feed as an enclosure.

8- The only thing left to do is to submit your RSS to Hubdog and lets the user enjoy your channel.
