Apple's Jobs admits poor health
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is being treated for a "hormone imbalance" but is staying on as the firm's head.

In a statement, Mr Jobs said he had been suffering from ill health for a number of months and had been losing weight throughout 2008.

"Doctors think they have found the cause: a hormone imbalance that has been robbing me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy," said Mr Jobs.

Apple's board said it was giving him "complete and unwavering support".

Mr Jobs, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004, has appeared increasingly gaunt at public appearances, sparking rumours about his health.

Speculation has intensified since December, after Apple said Mr Jobs would not be making his annual keynote address at the Macworld conference in San Francisco.
Lenovo Brings Wii style Functionality to PCs
Lenovo on Monday announced an all-in-one PC with a remote control that doubles as a motion-based gaming controller.

Like the iMac, the all-in-one IdeaCentre A600 combines a monitor and CPU in a thin system. It will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show from January 8 to 11 in Las Vegas.

Its wireless remote control is similar to Nintendo Wii's Wii Remote, which allows users to interact with a video game by waving or pointing the game controller. Using motion-sensing technology, the Wii Remote becomes a racket when swinging during a tennis game, or a weapon when playing a fighting game.

Lenovo's gadget mimics the Wii's approach.

"We have an example of a bowling game [where] you can wave the remote and that actually controls your game," said Ninis Samuel, director of marketing strategy and programs.

The company is bundling some motion-based games with the PC to use with the remote-based gaming controller. Titles of the games weren't immediately available.

LG Announces Netflix Streaming in TV's
Beginning this spring, Korean electronics giant LG will build Netflix streaming directly into some of its plasma and LCD HDTVs, the companies will announce today.

This means that Netflix subscribers will be able to stream more than 12,000 movies and TV shows on their TVs without a separate set-top box or a PC.

The move puts Netflix -- for convenience, at least -- ahead of its Internet streaming rivals like Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL), which require set-top boxes or computers for their movie streaming/rental services. (It's especially helpful if you don't have any more hi-def inputs available on your TV.)

It's possible Amazon or Apple could announce similar partnerships. Or perhaps Apple will make its own TVs at some point. But so far, Netflix leads here, especially if it can get other companies like Samsung and Panasonic to build similar TVs. More deals like this could also eventually put some pressure on cable companies like Comcast (CMCSA) to increase their on-dema...

Windows 7 to include DivX codec
One of the new features announced at the recent Windows 7 Reviewer’s Workshop in LA is that Windows 7 will natively support a number of popular media formats, so that users don’t have to worry about finding, installing and downloading third-party codecs.

This is an evolution in media support which is similar to the inclusion of native MPEG-2 playback in Windows Vista, providing the DVD playback functionality which was missing in Windows XP.

It's an interesting change by Microsoft, which, in the past, has doggedly clung to the hope that Windows Media Video will end up as the prevailing video format for the internet. It appears to have finally conceded that the vast majority of people are watching downloaded stuff in DivX or Xvid -- possibly a realisation driven by the enormous amount of telemetry data it has collected from users of Vista that it never had access to through XP. It has stopped short of bundling Adobe Flash support into Windows, though, as it develops its own ...

China Convicts 11 in Software Piracy Case
The news is flooded with reports of illegal activity online and in the technology world. Groups of pirates sell counterfeit software and make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing so. Many of the alleged software pirates hail from countries outside of the U.S. where the long arm of the law traditionally can’t reach.

Things are changing though and The New York Times reports that a court in southern China has convicted 11 people for violation of international copyright laws. The 11 people were working in a sophisticated software-counterfeiting ring that ran for years manufacturing and distributing pirated Microsoft Software around the world.

The 11 men were sentenced to terms ranging from 18 months to over six years in Chinese prison. Microsoft was very happy for the sentences handed down and said in a statement released Wednesday, "[The prison terms are] the stiffest sentences ever handed down in this type of Chinese copyright infringement case."

Users baffled as Zune MP3 players freeze up

Now this could become a very nasty problem. Did someone stick a virus or something in them all? This is a scary deal for all Zune 30 owners. Could this happen to all the other models?
Baffled consumers are griping about a mysterious glitch that appeared to cause thousands of Zune music players to simultaneously stop working late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Internet message boards have been flooded with complaints about Zune's 30GB models freezing, prompting Y2K-like speculation about end-of-year hardware or software problems.

"It seems that every Zune on the planet has just frozen up and will not work," posted a Mountain Home, Idaho, user on CNN's iReport.com. "I have 3 and they all in the same night stopped working."

Another iReporter said he was working the night shift at a Toys R Us store in Puerto Rico when his Zune player and the Zunes of four co-workers all failed about 1:30 a.m. ET Wednesday.

Dell’s MacBook Air Rival Confirmed
Adamo’s marketing pitch is clearly a design that improves on what Apple has achieved with the Macbook Air. Apple’s stunning notebook is only 0.76” thick and weighs about 3.0 lbs. Recent posts on Digitimes indicated that Dell may be able to slightly reduce the thickness of the lid that contains the screen. Apparently, the company has been ordering ultra-thin (and expensive) 3.5 mm (0.14”) panels from Samsung, which could drop the thickness of the Macbook Air’s lid (4.1 mm or 0.16”).

There is virtually no information on the standard hardware equipment of the Adamo Thirteen, besides the fact that it will have a 13” screen and come with a 45 watt power adapter that suggests that Dell will offer Intel’s regular 45 nm Core 2 Duo processors and not use low voltage CPUs. Browsing through Google’s Dell site cache also reveals that the Adamo will be available with a 8x slot-load DVD burner, an optional 2x Blu-ray/DVD-RW drive (with SATA interface) as well as a Displayport to connect to...

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 3G Starting Sun At $197
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) confirmed Friday it will begin selling Apple's ( AAPL) iPhone 3G on Sunday, offering the eight-gigabyte model for $197 and the 16 GB model for $297.

Prices are for phones with a new two-year service agreement with AT&T (T) or with a qualified upgrade, the retailer said in a brief statement on its web site.

Wal-Mart said it would match lower iPhone 3G prices available elsewhere. A spokeswoman added the iPhone 3G will be available starting Sunday at 2,493 of Wal-Mart's 3,200 locations.

The phones are now available in the U.S. only at Apple stores, Best Buy Co. Inc. (BBY) and AT&T.

The deal could significantly increase the number of iPhones sold in the U.S., Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a research note written before the deal was announced. In the note, Munster suggests an Apple/Wal-Mart relationship would boost expected overall iPhone sales by 10% next year to nearly 50 million. Munster didn't respond to a comment inquiry Frida...

Windows XP Retirement Postponed, Again
Windows XP has been a huge hit in the netbook market. It's strange to see Microsoft's older operating system still being more popular with many users than its newer Vista OS. If Microsoft had its way, XP would have been retired long ago and all Windows-based notebooks and netbooks would be running Vista by now.

Despite what Microsoft wants to see computer maker's use, the software giant has offered Windows XP alongside Vista since the launch of its newest OS. The software company has announced the retirement date for the XP operating system in the past, which was to have been June of 2008.

So many consumers and computer makers wanted to continue using Windows XP in low cost netbook systems that Microsoft extended the June deadline for retirement. The final cut off date was set to be January 31, 2009 after postponing the June deadline earlier this year.

Microsoft has now announced yet another delay in retiring Windows XP from the market. BBC News reports that Microsoft h...

Laptop shipments top desktops for first time
Notebook PC shipments rose almost 40 percent in the third quarter of 2008 over the same period in 2007, hitting 38.6 million units, said iSuppli, a market research firm based in El Segundo, Calif.

Netbooks may have been the deciding factor in pushing notebooks over the top.

"The big news from iSuppli's market share data for the third quarter was undoubtedly the performance of Taiwan's Acer," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms at iSuppli, in a statement. "Acer shipped almost 3 million more notebooks in the third quarter than it did in the preceding quarter, with the majority of those 3 million being the company's Netbook products," Wilkins said.

And Acer is close to catching No.2 Dell because of the surge in Netbook shipments, according to Wilkins.

All of this resulted in lower desktop PC shipments, which fell by 1.3 percent in the third quarter over the previous year to 38.5 million units.

Global PC unit shipments rose 15.4 percent over ...
